Winter driving: what a new driver needs to know

On icy roads the braking distance can triple, so double the gap to the car in front. Fit winter tyres when the temperature stays below 7°C, not on the day of the first snowfall.

In a skid, steer in the direction of the slide and lift off the accelerator without braking sharply. In winter our instructors set aside dedicated lesson time for exactly these skills.
